25/10/12 MT Work shop Lesson Singing

Musical Theatre Work Shop Lesson Singing
25/10/12

Today in our Work Shop Lesson we did Singing,
We started off with laying on the floor and doing our breathing controls, We breathed in with our hands on our stomach and was told to feel the stomach rising up as we brathed in (we did this to know how using our diaphram feels) laying on the floor rising our stomach up is using the diaphrame. We then instead of breathing out air we released it with humming and then 'hiss', 'lar', 'ssh', and simular sounds we did this to warm up our diaphram in sound, we then in stages got up at each stage we praticed what we did on the floor as we got up we found it harded (we did this in stages to make us understand its harder standing up singing, you use your diaphram more and it made us understand the use of the diaphram).
Standing up we sung 'lar' and 'ooo' going up and down scales like a wavey train track (we then were told to yawn) we yawn to take in more oxygen, in singing we use the yawn technic to open our jaw, this allows more projection in our singing we were then told to use this technic whilst doing our 'lar's', and 'oo's' this made us project more.
We then read out loud together the lyics to Sweeney Tod, we then hummed the song to the pinao, and added the words, we added chractorisation by emthsizing on the the contanits, this made the song more spooky (because it was a dark song) it added abit evilness.
in small groups people stood up and sung the song (they were told to pretend to be scared, prevend they were angry, pretend they were singing to a baby est) this made each performance different in chractor and projection.

  • Todays lesson showed us how to use our Diaphram and what differance it makes
  • Projection through the Yawning technic (opening the jaw)
  • We Learnt a song from Sweeny Tod
  • How to add chractorisation to Singing

WHY
breathing exercises = to warm up our voiceal chords and to understand how to use our diaphram what differance it feels whilst we sing to sing properly.
'Lar' and 'Ssh' understanding of releasing our air held slowly though breathing helping us to hold a note or word for longer and to warm up our diaphram in sound
getting up slowly helps us to use our diaphram more when were standing
yawn = we yawn to take more oxygen in singing we use a yawn in warm up to open the jaw warm up the jaw this allows more projection when we singing
in small groups different emotions = to change chractor in our voices in singing chractorisation

Why it is important to pratice my singing and warm up exercises daily

Why it is important to warm up before singing

I will pratice my breathing control and vocal exercises to strengthen my singing muslces (Diaphragm and vocal cords) and make my singing better in range and tones. We warm up before singing to proper the muslces (just like any other exercise, we warm up first to strencth the muslces) so that they will be able to handle the strain and tension that we put on them to sing. From warming up you will have much more control over your voice and diaphragm and vocal warm up's help to ensure a long life of a healthy singing voice.
Heres a quote from a Learn to Sing web site

http://learn2sing.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/why-you-shoud-warm-up-before-you-sing.html

Its incredibly important to warm up your voice before you sing because
  • It will relax your voice
  • Stop you from putting undue stress on your vocal chords.
  • Strengthen your singing voice
  • Reduce or removes the cracks and  breaks between registers
  • Make it easier to reach the extremes of your voice

Examples of warm-up's:

  1. Humming - This will start getting your voice warmed up without tiring it out.
  2. Brrrr up and down the first 5 notes of a scale. You produce this sound by closing your mouth and putting your fingers on your cheeks so the inside of your cheeks are touching your teeth, and hum the sound brrr, try to make an even and constant sound when doing it - This warm up also helps warm up your voice but also helps to relax your throat and mouth, it also helps with placement.
  3. Staccato Ha's (short) "ha-ha-ha" on 1,3,5 of a scale. - This helps to exercise your diaphragm's flexibility.
  4. Siren noises. Make siren noises starting low going up really high and then back down again - This will help to start exercising your range.
  5. Major arpeggios. Use open vowel sound (ah, ay or o). Start off low and go up half a step each time  and go as high as you can but don't strain.

Singing research in technique, range and styles

Singing techniques

When people sing they use the air in the lungs, the speed that the air comes out of the lung s can be controlled with the muscle called the diaphragm which goes across the front of the body below te ribs.

Voice ranges

Singers ca be called according to weather they have a higher or lower voice. Soprano, mezzo-soprano and contraito for the women.

Women voice ranges

Soprano- high singing voice, the word 'soprano' can also refer to the top line of choir music.
Mezzo-soprano- voice is a little lower than soprano but not low enough to be called a contralto.
Contralto- women with a lower voice range.

Male voice ranges

Tenor- high singing voice
Baritone- voice range between that of a tenor and bass.
Bass- lower singing voice

Children

Treble- childrens voice range, boys often soprano.

Types of singing

There are lots of different types of singing in the world each one has a different technique.

Pop- generally have a different technique. Thier singing is more from the throat.

Classical- learn to sing in a bel canto voice (bel canto means singing beautifully, flexibly, and smoothly delivering high and low notes in a similar style so that all the notes of a singers range sounds even from top to bottom) which uses lots of resonance in the head and makes a smooth sound.

Church singers- often are trained to use alot of head voice because this sounds beautiful in large cathedrals.

Singing at home 21st and 22rd OCT

This evening and last evening I have praticed my:
.breathing control (breathing in expanding my rib cage holding an breathing back out)
.sung 'lar' in scales going up pushing the high notes
.bom choca bom (with my mad family)
.lips teeth tip of the tongue
.researched different types of music for my three songs I have to choose.
.praticed the saved songs on my blog from musicals.

Why did i do this exercise

I have praticed my breathing control and vocal exercises to strengthen my singing muslces (Diaphragm and vocal cords) and make my singing better in range and tones. We warm up before singing to proper the muslces (just like any other exercise, we warm up first to strencth the muslces) so that they will be able to handle the strain and tension that we put on them to sing.

Dearest, darlingest momsie and popsicle

Elphaba(Spoken):
My dear father

Both:
There's been some confusion over rooming her at Shiz,

Elphaba:
But of course I'll care for Nessa

Galinda:
But of course I'll rise above it

Both:
for I know that's how you'd want me to respond,
yes, there's been some confusion for you
see my room mate is...

Galinda:
unusually and exceedingly peculiar and
altogether quite impossible to describe...

Elphaba(spoken):
Blonde

Galinda:
What is this feeling so sudden and new?

Elphaba:
I felt the moment I laid eyes on you

Galinda:
my pulse is rushing

Elphaba:
my head is reeling

Galinda:
my face is flushing

Both:
what is this feeling fervid as a flame,
does it have a name, yeeesss,
loathing unadulterated loathing

Galinda:
for your face

Elphaba:
your voice

Galinda:
Your clothing

Both:
lets just say I loathe it all.
Every little trait however small,
makes my very flesh begin to crawl, with simple utter loathing
theres a strange exilhiration in such total
detestation. It's so pure so strong
though i do admit it came on fast
still i do believe that it can last
and i will be loathing,
loathing you my whole life long

Ozians:
Dear Galinda you are just too good
how do you stand it i dont think i could
she's a terror she's a tartar we dont mean to show a bias
but Galinda you're a martyr.

Galinda:
Well, these things are sent to try us.

Ozians:
Poor Galinda forced to reside
with someone so disgusticified
we just want to tell you we're all on your side!

Oh, he makes me dizzy

Honey honey, let me feel it, a-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, don't conceal it, a-ha, honey honey
The way that you kiss good night

Ali / lisa
Way that you kiss me goodnight

Sophie
The way that you hold me tight

Ali / lisa
Way that you're holding me tight

Sophie
I feel like i wanna sing

Sophie / ali / lisa

My wedding, but according to
Mum's diary i've got three possible
Dads: sam, bill or harry.

Lisa
Do they know?

Sophie
What do you write to a total
Starnger?

Song 4 . Solo song
Big blonde and beauitful Hair spray

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApNp4L1H3vs&feature=related

Lyrics

Bring on that pecan pie!
Pour some sugar
On it sugar
Don't be shy.

Scoop me up
A mess of that
Chocolate swirl.
Don't be stingy
I'm a growing girl

I offer
Big love
With no apology.
How can I deny the world
The most of me?

I am not afraid to throw my weight around
Pound by pound by pound

Because I'm
Big, blond & beautiful
Face the fact
It's simply irrefutable!
No one wants a meal
That only offers the least
When girl, we're serving up
The whole damn feast

Slice me off a piece of that
hog head cheese!
Take a look inside
My book of recipes
Now don't you sniff around
For something fluffy and light.
We need a man who
Bring a man sized appetite!

I use a
Pinch of sugar
And a dash of spice!
I'll let you lick the spoon
Because it tastes so nice!

We'll keep in the oven
Till it's good and hot
Keep on stirring
Till you hit the spot!

Because I'm
Big, blond, & beautiful
There is nothing 'bout us
that's unsuitable

Why sit in the bleachers
Timid and afraid
When Edna
You look like the whole parade

They say that white has might
And thin is in
Well, that's just bull
'Cause ladies big is back
And as for black
It's beautiful!

All shapes and sizes
Follow me!
Who wants a twig
When you can climb a whole tree?

Yeah, Yeah
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

Groovy baby Groovy!

[Thanks to Brittany, Nancy, Lucy, Georgia for corrections

Song 5. Duet song
Wicked - for good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx3rjS_vSM4

Lyrics

(Elphaba):
I'm limited
Just look at me - I'm limited
And just look at you
You can do all I couldn't do, Glinda
So now it's up to you
For both of us - now it's up to you...

(Glinda):
I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

(Elphaba):
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend...

Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you

(Glinda):
Because I knew you

(Both):
I have been changed for good

(Elphaba):
And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for

(Glinda):
But then, I guess we know
There's blame to share

(Both):
And none of it seems to matter anymore

(Glinda):
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood

(Elphaba):
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood

(Both):
Who can say if I've been
Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
Changed for the better

(Glinda):
And because I knew you...

(Elphaba):
Because I knew you...

(Both):
Because I knew you...
I have been changed for good...

Song 6. (Duet, girl and boy)
Wicked - As long as you're Mine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4tWBetHvsA&feature=relmfu

ELPHABA
Kiss Me too fiercely
Hold me too tight
I need help believing
You're with me tonight
My wildest dreamings
Could not forsee
Lying beside you
With you wanting me

And just for this moment
As long as you're mine
I've lost all resistance
And crossed some border line
And if it turns out
It's over too fast
I'll make every last moment last
As long as you're mine

FIYERO
Maybe I'm brainless
Maybe I'm wise
But you've got me seeing
Through different eyes
Somehow I've fallen
Under your spell
And somehow I'm feeling
It's up that I fell

BOTH
Every moment
As long as you're mine
I'll wake up my body
And make up for lost time

FIYERO
Say there's no future
For us as a pair

BOTH
And though I may know
I don't care
Just for this moment
As long as you're mine
Come be how you want to
And see how bright we shine
Borrow the moonlight
Until it is through
And know I'll be here holding you
As long as you're mine

FIYERO
(spoken)
What is it?(etc.)

ELPHABA
(spoken)
It's just for the first time,
I feel ... wicked

Singing Research

Scales :
Scales are a series of notes that go up or down in pitch and have a distinctive, regular pattern to them. If you sing Mary Had A Little Lamb using just those first four words and you repeat them at different pitch levels (going higher and going lower), you will have an elementary type of singing scale.

scale and arpeggio warm ups

Singing research differnt warm up exercises

I found this on the BBC website different singing warm up exercises

 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sing/learning/warmingup.shtml

Warm up your voice

Warm up your voice to avoid straining and damaging your vocal cords. Always take a deep breath before you start and try yawning - yawning opens up your throat and helps your voice resonate.
Exercise 1
  1. Breathe out through your mouth releasing all the air from your lungs.
  2. Once your lungs feel completely empty, relax your stomach muscles, open your mouth and let the air flood back in.
  3. Do this several times.
  4. Now breathe in again and when you release the air add an 'sss' sound. See how long you can hold it.
  5. Try this again using 'shh' and 'fff' sounds. This will help to build different vocal muscles.
Exercise 2
  1. Close your eyes and spend a little time breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. (When singing, you should breathe in through your nose and out through your nose and mouth.)
  2. When breathing in, imagine the breath going down into the lowest part of the lungs, keeping the shoulders down and relaxed.
  3. When breathing out, try to maintain your inflated shape, breathing out slowly until you feel as empty as possible.
Exercise 3
  1. Counting four, breathe out whilst you bring your left ear down to your shoulder.
  2. Counting four, breathe in and bring your head up to the starting position.
  3. Repeat with the right ear.

MT Singing 18/10/12

Singing
18/10/12

Today we did

  • sung notes in scales (singing in steps) and Arpeggio (singing in jumps)
  • we praticed our vowel notes in scales
  • we started learning our consnent sounds using words in song
Frayes
we three fees need trees
lips teeth tip of the toune : on one note going down scaley to practice technic
bom choca bom : rivmic pation
are there be's on you : all five vowel sounds in one practice

casicail singing technic
rinsing up by sema tones : v,e,a,r,o and holed the o.

  • we praticed our range
today i pushed myself on the high notes userally i would go quiet even tho it was squeaky i performed it.

  • We sung in three part hearmey, two pears and one individual,
the individual (Lizzy) sung at a high range (melody)
me and beth sung at a mid range
and the two boys sung at a low range
and we all sung in simony in Latin.

From today i will pratice everyday:

  • my breathing controls
  • projection
  • high range
  • scale and Arpeggio singing
and will document and evidence it

Why is it important that i do these exercises

I will pratice my breathing control and vocal exercises (singing) to strengthen my singing muslces (Diaphragm and vocal cords) and make my singing better in range and tones. We warm up before singing to proper the muslces (just like any other exercise, we warm up first to strencth the muslces) so that they will be able to handle the strain and tension that we put on them to sing.

Photos of my human body research board for presentation

Photos of me creating my human body

The human body was created with paper mashe I stared of by researching how to make paper mashe glue. I started off with covering the manakin with cling film to protect it, I terd new paper into long strips and began making the glue. I mixed together water and glue, I covered the cling film in glue and start the put layers of new paper on top I brushed down the strips with a thin layer of glue I covered the front and sides and hair dryed it when it was dry I put another load of layers on I repeated the same and dryed it again I then painted the body with a skin tone pink, I dryed it again with the hair dryer and painted the organs and nervous in different colures (bright colures). Oxygen = yellow. Heart = blue. Lungs = green. Liver = pink. Stomach = dark blue. Kidney = light green. Bladder= also light green. Ureter = yellow. Large intestines= red. Small intestines= light blue. Spleen = green. Pancreas = also light blue. Diaphragm = dark blue. A femoralla= green (down legs). Arms (cava superior) = blue. Spinal cord = yellow + blue

Health Performer : Human Structure and Function's Research 11/10/12

Health Performer
Research on the Human Structure and Function's
11/10/2012

Function: Circulatory system, Respiratory system, Nervous system.

Nervous system

Nervous shown though the body in blue and red                   nervous shown in the lungs

My Understanding of the Nervous System.

The nervous start from the brain, the brain tells the foot to move though the spinal cord the spinal cord leads the the message from the brain to any part of the body, a message passes from the brain though the spinal cord down though the leg to the foots nervous.

Why is the Nerous System important to dancing:

The nervous tell which part of the body to move, the nervous control how we dance, if a dance if fluent or stiff.

                     Circulatory System

Heart

My understanding of the Circulatory System.

The Human Circulatory System connects all the organs together, the body needs oxgyen (O2) to work, when oxygen is taken in it goes though the lungs the oxgyen is taken and delivered to all parts of the body though the blood (red blood cells) that is pumping around the body constently.

Why is the Circulatory System important to dancing:

Before dancing we need to warm up our bodys, we need to increase our blood flow and heart beat and this is through the Circulatory System.
Red Blood Cells

My understanding of Red blood cells.

Red Blood cells are the most common type of blood cell and the vertebrate organism's principal means of delivering oxygen (O2) to the body tissues via the blood flow through the circulatory system.
They take up oxygen in the lungs and release it while squeezing through the body's capillaries.
These cells cytoplasm is rich in haemoglobin, an iron-containing biomolecule that can bind oxygen and is responsible for the blood's red color.
In humans, mature red blood cells are oval and flexible biconcave disks. They lack a cell nucleus and most organelles to accommodate maximum space for haemoglobin. 2.4 million new erythrocytes are produced per second The cells develop in the bone marrow and circulate for about 100–120 days in the body before their components are recycled by macrophages. Each circulation takes about 20 seconds. Approximately a quarter of the cells in the human body are red blood cells.

Respiratory System

My understanding of The Respiratory System

The Respiratory system is the biological system of an organism that introduces respiratory gases to the interior and performs gas exchange. In humans  the anatomical features of the respiratory system include airways, lungs, and the respiratory muscles

Structure : Skeleton, Joints, Muscles, Tendon, Ligaments

The Muscle structure

My understanding of the Muscular System

The muscular system is an organ system consisting of skeletal, smooth and muscles. It permits movement of the body, maintains posture, and circulates blood throughout the body. The muscular system in vertebrates is controlled through the nervous system,

Why are our Muslces important in dancing:

Our muslces allow us to have a bigger variaty of dancing stronger muslces allows us to hold our weight better for longer we are able to do more.

The Human Skeleton Structure

Immune System, Be Healthy
The human immune system is made up of a number of interdependentcell types which collectively porject the person's body from various parastic, fungal, bacterial and viral infections, as well as from the growth of tumor cells.
immune system organs
Bone marrow : every cell involved in a person's immune system is initally derivered from bone marrow.
Thymus : the Thymus function is to produce mature, T cells, immature tymocytes, also referred to as Prothymocytes, emerge from the person's bone marrow and move into thier thymus.
Spleen: a person's spleen lymph nodes work as an immunological filter for thier body fluid referred to as Lymph.
Immune System Cells
T cells : are also called T killer/suppressor cells and are important because they are involved in directly killing viral infected cells, specific tumor cells.
Natural Killer Cells : Natural killer cells are similar to cells from killer T cells.
B cells : The primary function of B cells is to produce antibodies in response to foreign such as viruses, bacteria and tumor cells.
The Immune System
  • Enzyme - is a protein that helps speed up a chemical reaction in the body.
  • Antigens - are substances that are recognized as a threat by the body's immune system, which triggers the formation of specific antibodies against the substance.
  • Bone Marrow - is the soft tissue inside bones where blood cells are made.
  • Lymphatic - is the condition of being protected against an infectious disease. Immunity often develops after a germ is introuduced to the body. one type of immunity occurs when the body make special protein molecules called antibodies to fight the disease-causeing germ. The next time that germ enters the body, the antibodies quickly attack it, usually preventing the germ from causing disease.

In some instances, people receive antibodies from another person to help their own immunity. This is known as passive immunity. infants are born with immature immune systems and receive important antibodies.

Bacteria : are microscopic organisms, some types of which can cause disease.
Fungi : are microorganisms that can grow in or on the body, causing infections of internal organs or of the skin, hair and nails.
Healthy Tips

  • Short Term - To help maintain your immune resistance. It also helps replace the vitamin C lost during colds.
  • Long Term - To increase the bodys level of protective substances for long term cell protection.

    • Eat a minimum of five portions of fresh fruit and veg every day . They are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and phytonutrients to help maintain a healthy immune system.
    • stop smoking as smoke contains billions of free redicals which also damages the nasal lining and can greatly affect your immune resistance.
    • Aviod stress as this can make your body feel down.
    • Get more sleep, not getting enough sleep can reduce the effectiveness of your immune system by up to 50%.
    • Take regular exercise to stimulate circulation and maintain a strong immune system.
    • Avoid refined suger and fatty foods as these can affect normal healthy immune function.

Why it is important to be a healthy performer:

Every dancer should follow a healthy diet. The body performs at its best when filled with the the proper fuel. Dancing requires lots of energy, so dancers must consume enough calories to keep up with physical demands. A dancer's diet should consist of a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, and adequate fluids.
